9/11 Google Doodle Posted: 3 months ago by cb__
Well, more like there was none. Not earth-shattering but it was surprising to me. Did you guys think so too? Just curious..

So take them over, and revise their policies.

It's not like they aren't a free-market entity, trying to make a profit.

It's not like this is something overlooked. I think highlighting the POSITIVE of making it a national day of service is more fitting.

Do we really need a reminder on a search engine of terrorist attacks? Please no. It was ubiquitous on tv, radio, internet.

Wow, that's an unbiased site.

Bulls**t, I've made this comment when there was similar discussion over Google ignoring something or other that somebody or nobody gave a s**t about, Google is a business, a private business, not a friggin' public service.

Don't like how they do things? Use a different search engine.

If they'd done some kind of tribute you can bet your ass they'd be accused by someone or another of cashing in on a tragedy.

I wholeheartedly agree. And I'm sure they would have had even more people protesting a doodle of the twin towers as 'a heartless attempt at turning a tragedy into a joke' or something-or-other.

The site was linked to just support the question, it isn't my own personal feeling. Like I said, it isn't earth-shattering, just a curiosity to me. Thanks for your opinions, all.

Would it have been better if Google had displayed a flippant "doodle" to commemorate a national tragedy? It must be exhausting for the author to carry out such a thorough search for something to be offended by.

Oh so true, i am greatly offended.
I would've loved to have seen the two o's in google depicted as cute little twin towers as the tittle on the i is turned into a tiny airplane.

yeah, NO.

Yeah, Google doodles are generally cutesy or cool, if the author of the article sees 9/11 as a cutesy thing, I don't agree with him.

I appreciate hard work, but I have no respect for people who go to such great lengths to find things to be offended about, no matter how ridiculous.

Not sure I totally agree, though a proper tribute would be nice. While we directly remembered those fallen on 9/11/01, Google chose this route. While the message is fine, it's also sanitizing history, in my opinion. I really liked Bing's way of doing it.

Personally, though, this reminded me to try switching to Bing and see how much better it is. I honestly haven't given it a proper try yet, and have been planning on doing it, and I've been using Google as my search engine for years now. So I actually am going to switch to Bing now and see if it's any good.

I really hope that this doesn't come out the wrong way but Google took the right approach.

Yes it was a terrible day in history, yes other sites did their own little thing but Google took the right approach.

My reasoning for this is down to the minimal approach that Google take on their search site. I also noticed that Fox News have jumped on the bash Google bandwagon.

The problem is that the other sites that are mentioned are designed in such a manner that will allow prominent displays to be shown in whatever way they choose where it has been pointed out that Google have "Doodles" which are intended to be funny or at least lighthearted. There is no possible way that they could have depicted 9/11 without complaints.

It's only a search engine afterall.

Google could make a naked man out of their logo and I would still use it as frequently as I do now. Really, when your company is so successful that it's name has become a verb in Webster's dictionary, it's amazing that they are STILL giving us more and more new programs that we can use to look for naked women. Or naked men, as to which I'm sure the logo would save them all a lot of time.

Did anybody read the comments to that article on the site? Only one dissenting opinion out of 45. What a bunch of self serving right wing nut jobs. The sites obvious bias and corresponding readers makes me completely dismiss any idea the article is trying to make.

On the other hand... what if it was a deliberate marketing ploy by Google?

By ignoring 9/11 in their logo-thingy, they just got loads of free publicity from a bunch of jackasses who thought they were bashing Google but were really promoting it.

What more can such a giant company do to get its name out there? I'll bet that all kinds of people switched *to* Google because of this instead of the other way around...

Here's a VERY cynical thought.

Why, given that this was the 8th anniversary, did they make a big deal about it?

Google has NEVER had a doodle for 9/11. So why would one even be expected this year?

Oh, wait, there's a democrat for president.

Huh.

Would they really need that, though? It is Google. They are a verb.

After posting this I read somewhere that they don't commemorate sad/solemn days..which makes sense. Didn't mean to ruffle feathers! but I can also understand..

Why does this keep cropping up?

Google have persistently avoided using their Doodles to make light of sombre occasions, as I think is right and proper.

It's not a surprise that they'd keep this up and yet people seem determined to be insulted by it.

(CB - I mean to direct that at the article's author for writing it, not you for posting it).
