As hybrid cars gobble rare metals, shortage looms
The Prius hybrid automobile is popular for its fuel efficiency, but its electric motor and battery guzzle rare earth metals, a little-known class of elements found in a wide range of gadgets and consumer goods. picked by nateebiinature 3 months ago

I personally think this will only be a temporary problem.

Crack the problem with producing hydrogen efficiently (Hopefully with breakthrought research into nuclear fusion), then we won't need batteries for our cars.

This has been a looming problem for some time, and it always amazes me how many people are absolutely oblivious to it.

Personally, I think it is a lovely and awesome problem. REE's are fun to explore for, and they are now keeping me employed.

I laugh manically at the urban wannabe hippies who curse and ridicule me for being a geologist - they just can't fathom that buying a new hybrid and new gadgets will actually create more and different mining!

Interesting verbiage here...

Yes, rare metals are utilized in the manufacture of hybrids, but they don't "guzzle" them!

Is it to the point yet where we would rather have hybrid vehicles, or computers and cel phones?

We need Dr. Manhatton to come and produce some more of the rare metals needed.
