For well over a decade, online communication was faceless, and The Web saw that it was good.

Bulletin boards begat Newsgroups
Newsgroups begat message boards,
Message boards begat blogs,
Blogs begat Friendster, et al.

Makes sense for a backlash against the personalization of web presence.

It seems the older crowd—people 25 and older—has given social networks the unmistakable stench of being not cool. Why would an 18-year-old kid want to mimic the lifestyle of a 30-year-old?
I'm only 23, but this makes me feel old already.

Perhaps it's the older crowd because Facebook was never a "kids" site, just one that opened itself up to kids. It started 5 years ago, and its target demographic by design was college age kids. Well, these college age kids are now mostly 25 and older. And you say that these are most of who is on the site? Hmm... seems to be a pattern here...

Yeah I feel the same way. There is a generation (my generation, the ASCII porn generation) that went through puberty with the early World Wide Web, that used Unix and telnet terminals to MUD, and Mosaic before it was Mozilla to surf. You WILL NEVER get rid of us, be mad at your parents for joining FB, be appalled at your grand parents for tweeting, but WE parents of kids under 10 years olds are hear to stay, and we were hip to most of the s**t you adopt as cool WAY before you ever heard of it. There will be a curve, but for a long time we will have both the MONEY to take advantage of the cool s**t, and the desire and time to find the cool s**t, so if the rage is at the 25-40 crowd give it up, because WE ARE the WEB, and we can make a cheesy HTML website complete with midi in notepad in our sleep.

Mere weeks after I join facebook it gets labelled "uncool". Coincidence? I think not.

Where's my straight razor? I have some wrists that are just begging to be cut.

You're an old Plime member, and Plime is still uber cool.

Maybe it'll get the younger kids to leave.

My list of grievances on this front is extensive. Most of the people I know from Wheyback have kids and families and s**t. I don't. Yet, how do they possibly have time to send me "Chipmunk Candybombs," or "Vampire Pillowfights" all the f*cking day long?

Welcome to the Internet. You get to type some s**t. Make some sense, will you?

People still use Facebook?

I've actually moved beyond social networking sites altogether now. In fact, websites in general have become quaint relics of the past for me. It all started with a freak accident during an otherwise normal Google search for mock-mint julep recipes: a one-in-a-billion temporal glitch caused a sponsored link from the year 2214 to appear on my screen, albeit for a fraction of a second. The instant I clicked through, my consciousness was absorbed into the collective knowledge of billions of minds; a hive of interconnected entities based solely on the premise of swapping non-alcoholic cocktail recipes. As I type, I feel my personality being merged with the white noise of a collective consciousness. I am no longer social networking - I am now literally evolving into a higher being. I am becoming a Star Child.

But it's only a matter of time before the adults wreck this, too.
