« pocksucket:I have an Asus EEE PC and it's great. So small (about the size of a DVD case) but fully functional. In terms of the specifics of what you've said, get as big a battery (6 cell, probably) as possible.

Everything else is a given.

If you've got any specific questions then ask and I shall do my best to answer.
I also have this notebook, Marli. I love it. It's the perfect little back-up/take along.

Thanks guys! Looks like I'll try to get one of those, then. I am happy with my laptop, but it really is kind of big, and not something I want to lug across campus and have to plug in and charge every two hours.

Well it would seem that when you are developing tapestry portlets in jsr-748 utilizing a Kernel transport network, you have allocated insufficient amounts of cow-bell...very common problem really.

« Marli : (thanks, Lynx!)

I would love some opinions on netbooks.

I'm going back to school in January. I have a laptop, but it's cumbersome, and its battery life sucks.

Would a netbook be a good way to go for my school computer? I only really need it to do three things well: access the internet, run something like Word, and not die on me during a 3-hour class. I have a PC and a laptop to do everything else. So something cheap and small would be awesome, and a netbook seems to be what fits the bill. Any opinions about them, or about brands?
I have just bought myself an Acer Aspire One for Uni. Claire had one of the first gen ones which runs a strange type of Linux and despite my offers to change it she has got used to it and now won't let me. She uses hers for Uni but when connected via wifi has a short battery life (about 3 hours).

I have bought the newest version which comes with Windows 7 netbook version and I have just installed Linux Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. I have a six cell bettery in mine which according to the specs will run for 7 hours but in reality with wifi use gives me about 5.

Hd size is 160gb which is more than enough for my needs and in any case I have set up a vpn so I can access everything I need from home.

All in all I would recommend a netbook to anyone an although I haven't tried any other brands the Acer does everything I want.

My cousin had a virus in his computer. He called a computer pro and with his help they removed it.

All seems well except he cannot utilize Ctrl>Alt>Delete to activate the Task Manager.

The computer guy says the only way he knows how to restore this feature is to re-install the OS.

Since he can't find his OS disk he's hoping that he may be wrong. I offered to ask for another opinion in this thread. Hope one of you guru's know a way around the problem.

He's running XP home edition on his PC.

Thanks for any help you folks can offer. :)

I have the XP disc and Windows 7. I could send you one, if you need it, as a last resort.

Right click on the taskbar at the bottom (or wherever it was moved to) and choose task manager from the menu

windows key + r, in the run window that pops up type in taskmgr and click OK.

if you do need to reinstall windows, any other copy of the disk (same version as was originally installed same level of service pack, etc.) or there may be the option of creating recovery disks from the PC.. the important part is the serial number, which if it's installed and running (and genuine) is possible to obtain as long as programs can still be run on there.

That would be great Bingo, I hope it doesn't come to that.

Is there sort of a "repair" feature on the OS disks? Would it mean literally starting out from scratch?

Thank you for your offer. :)

I believe it means starting from scratch, but I'm not really sure. I'll let someone else your questions. I just have the offer of the OS if needed.

there's a rescue function also, but it doesn't always work.

personally I'd suggest a different computer pro if he cannot do anything except install windows.

from the intertubes...

A Favorite Trick of Malware is Disabling Task Mgr. to prevent you being able to stop their ongoing processes as an aid to removing them.
Have you had any other symptoms that might indicate a trojan or spyware or virus?
Xp has a protected (read only) copy of valid system files stored onboard for the purpose of correcting ones that have become corrupted by what ever cause. You can do the following: CheckDisk/Error Repair to fix them. This should give you back your CAD task Mgr. Like This:

Disk/repair (Check Disk) (like SFC)
Left click on My Computer(open)
Right click on "C" or your OS drive if another letter.
Left click Properties and then click Tools Tab.
Left click on "Error Checking"> Check Now.
Left click to enter check mark in BOTH boxes offered.
Left click on "Start".
Computer will have to reboot to begin repairs.
Just leave alone (you're locked out anyway) 'til process finished.
In regular mode will take about 1 Hour (more/less)
In Safe Mode about 2 hours.
If computer normal after process complete you might want to create a new
restore point and Label it POST ERROR REPAIR.
This is based on using an onboard copy of sys
files if copy is ok.
If copy is corrupted, it may tell you to insert XP or SP2(if patch applied) disk or to indicate location of SP2 info to get new,
clean copy inserted. Good to have disk at hand. Good Luck!!

There is a repair feature. Probably not necessary though.

CTRL+ALT+DEL is not the best way to activate Task Manager - it simply fires up a menu.

If he (or anyone else) wants to get to Task Manager the key combo is CTRL+SHIFT+ESC - get him to try that.

Do you know what the infection was?

I sent all of the suggestions to him, the one fron Soreen and Bingo last night, the others at 8 AM this morning but no response yet.

However he's almost my age and lives in New Jersey so I assume he's still napping. :)

Either that or his computer is completely screwed now.

So I don't yet know what the infection was and I will post the results as soon as I hear from him. In the meanwhile thanks to all of you for your help. I continue to be impressed with the computer skills you folks have. Fantastic.

DerAlt, DO NOT LET HIM FORMAT THE DRIVE!!!

That is a BALONEY RESPONSE and only means the PC tech was in over his head!!!

Have him go to and post his symptoms there. My kids got several nasty viruses on their PC that did this exact thing and the guys there got it nixed no sweat. Their FIRST RULE is do no harm to the PC and installed OS. I cannot stress enough how awesome these guys are.

It WILL take a few days to get a response because there is always a backlog of people being helped. Tell him to BE PATIENT and NOT TO BUMP his original thread, they WILL get to him in 3 or 4 days.

Also he needs to follow their instructions to the letter. Some of the stuff they have you do is low level, but they can talk ANYONE regardless of experience level through the steps needed to repair the system.

Oh yeah, everything they did to fix the PC was free of charge, including the recommended virus software. You can donate via PayPal to help support the site if you want, but it is by no means required.

Just heard from my cousin. His computer is operating VERY slow.

He's tried the simpler things and they haven't worked.

He's going to try some of the more complicated steps to see if there's any hope. :(

He say's he picked up the virus when he downloaded Windows Enterprise Suite.

I don't know what site he was downloading from.
