Heh. No, really, go watch that part again. She's trapped on dry land at the bottom of the ocean and can't get in the water while Ursula hurls lightning bolts at her. :D

I love Disney, I really really do, but they don't have a great track record for good female heroines throughout.

And? It went along well with the story. From Aladdins perspective that is the worst thing Jafar could have done to her, which is exactly why you rooted for Aladdin, and not Jafar. Jafar

I agree that Belle's story is the weakest argument...but you could say that her love = her sex, so it could hold up.

You could, but why? The story was about simba, he is the protagonist. I know this isn't too serious, but really, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. There are just as many movies about men being saved by women, and only finding a happy ending through love. The only difference is that women are usually saved from physical dangers, and men from themselves.
But seriously, 80% of all Disney movies are about a protagonist falling in love, and having fun in the process. Male or female, we can all enjoy a little romanticism.

Ariel- It wasn't just about the prince (although he is cute) she collected human gadgets for a long time before him, she wanted to be part of the surface world as much as she loved him.

Jasmine-To be perfectly fair, the movie was about Aladdin.

Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella- You got me there.

Mulan-Replace gender discrimination with class prejudice and it is no different than Aladdin.

(Oh, and I'm not saying the stories aren't reasonable as they are. Mulan is a fair reflection of Chinese society at a certain point of history. The older classics are modeled more closely on European fairy tales, etc).

Saves all of China despite having no value because of her gender, narrowly avoids being killed by her own soldiers/compatriots. Story doesn't have a happy ending until she marries the hunky captain.
