OK so I am now using chrome. FF newest release seems really buggy to me so I figured I'd give it a go.
I like it, a lot. One thing worries me though, Facebook chat pop-ups cause chrome to crash and I get an error from VLC player which states that there is no file to play.

Even when VLC isn't running.
Anyone else had this?
I've not seen either of these (though granted, I don't use Facebook chat much anymore). Facebook, otherwise, never has given me problems in Chrome.
I use VLC but never saw that error message. What steps do you take to see this happen?
Plime is an editable wiki community where users can add and edit weird and interesting links. Users earn karma when other users vote on their actions. The more karma you have, the more power you have at Plime.

I prefer Safari 4 over any other browser i've used. Chrome won't run on my OS.
But safari 4 doesn't have any issues with what you've said.

Logged into FB in Chrome and chat turned on. If someone tries to message me then I get a pop up telling me chrome has failed miserablby due to missing dlls (which aren't in fact missing) then it closes leaving me with a VLC error box.
I would reinstall FF but I like chrome now and it really pissed me off that FF release a version that was so full of bugs.

«dingbat:libz-1-2.dll, avcodec-51.dll, and libfontconfig-1.dll
These three.
It only happens with FB chat, I have tried to reproduce it with lots of other chat applications but so far all is good.
Also it is only with the pop-up chat and not with the chat as a separate window.
You said that the files exist. One thing that you could try is to add the folder that they are in to your path variable. In case you don't know how to do that: right-click My Computer, go to Properties, click on the Advanced tab, then the Environment Variables button, then edit the Path variable (add a semicolon and then the path to where the DLL files are).
This may fix it. I don't think this is a Google Chrome issue, but rather, a VLC bug. I'm not exactly sure why it would be triggered in Facebook chat though.

I have already done that but thanks for taking the time to suggest it.
Apparently chrome causes this problem of the missing dlls but not the VLC error on other computers where VLC is not installed using FB chat. But not all.

Does the fix work or not? I actually saw a similar thing listed for Mozilla browsers as well in my cursory Google search on the error, only on Windows though. I haven't been able to reproduce it myself yet.
EDIT: Oh, it's probably to play the new message sounds. It's trying to load the plugin to play the sound from the browser.

That has given me an idea; I have disabled FB chat sounds.
Now I need someone to talk to me. Pity hardly anyone ever does.
